Sunscreen Guide: SPF, PA Ratings, and Reapplication Rules That Actually Matter
What SPF and PA ratings actually measure, how much sunscreen you really need, and the reapplication rules people almost always get wrong.
Sunscreen is the single most evidence-backed anti-aging product that exists, and it's also the step most people apply incorrectly — too little product, wrong reapplication timing, or skipped entirely on cloudy or indoor days. Here's what the ratings actually mean and how to use them correctly.
What SPF actually measures
SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures protection against UVB rays — the ones primarily responsible for sunburn and a major contributor to skin cancer risk. It does not directly measure UVA protection (more on that below).
The math behind SPF numbers is not linear, which surprises most people:
- SPF 15 blocks about 93% of UVB rays
- SPF 30 blocks about 97%
- SPF 50 blocks about 98%
- SPF 100 blocks about 99%
The jump from SPF 30 to SPF 50 is smaller than it looks on the label — about 1 percentage point of additional blockage. SPF 30 is generally considered the practical minimum for daily use; going higher gives modest additional protection, useful mainly for extended outdoor exposure, not a dramatically different product.
PA ratings: the part most people ignore
PA (Protection Grade of UVA) ratings, common on Asian sunscreen formulations and increasingly elsewhere, measure protection against UVA rays — the ones responsible for premature aging, and long-term skin damage, and which penetrate deeper into skin (and through window glass, unlike most UVB).
PA ratings use a plus-sign scale:
- PA+ — Some UVA protection
- PA++ — Moderate UVA protection
- PA+++ — High UVA protection
- PA++++ — Highest UVA protection
A high SPF number with no PA rating (or a low one) can still leave you under-protected against the UVA rays responsible for a large share of visible skin aging. If you're specifically trying to prevent early wrinkles, sun spots, or sagging, PA rating matters as much as SPF — arguably more, since UVA exposure is constant and less dependent on visible sun intensity.
"Broad spectrum" is the label term that covers both
In markets without PA ratings (like the US), look for "Broad Spectrum" on the label — this indicates the product has been tested to protect against both UVB and UVA, even without giving you the granular PA breakdown. A high SPF without a "Broad Spectrum" claim technically only guarantees UVB protection.
How much sunscreen you actually need
Most people apply roughly a quarter to a half of the amount used in SPF testing, which means the "SPF 30" on your bottle is functioning closer to SPF 10–15 in real-world use. The standard reference amount for the face and neck is about a quarter teaspoon (1.2mL) — noticeably more than the thin layer most people apply.
A simple gauge: if you can't feel a slight, deliberate layer of product sitting on your skin for the first minute or two after application, you probably haven't applied enough.
Reapplication rules people get wrong
- "All-day" sunscreen doesn't exist in practice — most formulas break down under UV exposure, sweat, and touch within 2 hours of meaningful sun exposure, regardless of what the packaging implies.
- Sitting indoors near a window still counts. UVA passes through glass; if you're at a desk near a bright window for hours, that's ongoing UVA exposure that a single morning application doesn't fully cover for the rest of the day.
- Makeup complicates reapplication, since most people aren't going to reapply cream sunscreen over full makeup every 2 hours. SPF-containing setting sprays or powders are a practical (if imperfect) reapplication method over makeup — better than skipping reapplication entirely.
- Cloudy days still transmit significant UV. Up to 80% of UV rays pass through cloud cover, which is why "it's not sunny today" is one of the most common reasons people skip SPF on days they still need it.
Chemical vs mineral sunscreen — does it matter?
Both are effective when properly formulated and applied. The practical differences:
- Chemical (organic) filters (avobenzone, octinoxate, and others) absorb UV radiation and convert it to heat. Typically thinner, easier to apply under makeup, less likely to leave a white cast.
- Mineral (physical) filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) sit on top of skin and reflect/scatter UV radiation. Often preferred for sensitive or reactive skin, and required for skin prone to heat-triggered redness.
Neither category is universally "better" — the right choice depends on skin sensitivity, cosmetic preference, and how consistently you'll actually reapply a given formula. The best sunscreen is the one you'll actually use daily and reapply realistically.

Do I need sunscreen on days I'm not leaving the house? If you're near windows during daylight hours, yes for UVA purposes — though the stakes are lower than direct outdoor midday exposure. If you're in a windowless space all day, the practical need drops significantly.
Is a higher SPF always better? Not meaningfully past SPF 50 in terms of raw UVB blockage — the bigger factor is consistent daily application and reapplication, which matters more than chasing SPF 100 while applying too little of it.
Can I rely on makeup with SPF instead of a separate sunscreen? Most people don't apply enough foundation or powder to reach the tested SPF level — makeup SPF is a nice supplement to a dedicated sunscreen, not a reliable replacement for one.
